EMDR is an acronym for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Most frequently EMDR therpy is used to relieve the symptoms of PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder. EMDR therapy uses movements of the eyes similar to those which occur naturally during REM sleep. The American Psychiatric Association "Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Acute Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder" states that EMDR is equal to CBT, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as an effective treatment for relieving symptoms of PTSD. EMDR therapy is widely used for trauma victims of disaster or other life threatening occurrences.
